What is HEIC, and why does your iPhone use it?
HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is a container for the HEIF format with HEVC compression — the default camera format on iPhones since iOS 11. A photo takes up roughly half the space of a JPG at the same quality, which is why Apple chose it. The catch is compatibility: Windows won't open HEIC without a paid HEVC extension, and older software, many websites, online shops, and official forms don't accept it either. That's why HEIC usually gets converted to JPG before sending or printing.
HEIC vs. JPG — which one to use when
HEIC earns its keep on your phone — it saves storage and keeps higher quality, including HDR data. JPG wins everywhere you send a photo onward: every device, program, and website opens it. Choose PNG when you need lossless output, for example for further editing — at the cost of a much larger file. And don't be surprised when the JPG comes out bigger than the original HEIC: nothing was lost, HEIC is simply the newer, more efficient format.
How to shoot JPG directly on your iPhone
Want to skip converting in the future? Switch your iPhone over: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG from then on (at the cost of more storage). It won't touch the HEIC photos you already have — that's what this tool is for. Why won't my HEIC photo open on Windows?

How do I make my iPhone shoot JPG directly?
On your iPhone, open Settings → Camera → Formats and choose Most Compatible. New photos will be saved as JPG from then on. Photos you already took stay in HEIC, though — convert those with this tool.
Is the conversion safe? Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

Will the conversion change the photo quality?
JPG is saved at 92% quality, which is visually indistinguishable from the original; you can lower it in the settings if you need a smaller file. PNG is lossless but produces much larger files. A JPG often ends up bigger than the original HEIC — that's normal, HEIC is simply a more efficient format.
Can I convert multiple photos at once? What about Live Photos?
